HERNING AND HANDBALL
Three European Championships, several European club matches - and two World Cup final rounds on the way.
Handball is closely associated with Herning. This has been the case for decades. In 1978, Herning hosted several matches in the first and only Men’s World Championship to take place on Danish soil. In a close-fought final, West Germany beat the Soviet Union, 20-19, while Denmark lost the bronze medal to East Germany.
In 1996, MCH’s Circular Hall was the venue for the European Championship final in women’s handball. Coached by Ulrik Wilbek and featuring high-profile player Anja Andersen, “The Iron Ladies” defeated Norway with a final score of 25-23 and secured Denmark its second European gold medal.
In December 2010, Europe’s leading women’s handball nations returned to Herning to play in the recently-opened multi-arena, Jyske Bank BOXEN. The Danish public flocked to the middle rounds as well as the finals weekend and, after five days of intense play, with a total of 55,000 spectators attending the sold-out event, Norway beat Sweden, 25-20, to secure the crown.
Herning has also hosted a long series of international club matches, including the Women’s European Cup final in 1994, the finals of the EHF European Cup (women) and Challenge Cup (men) in 2002 and the Women’s Champions League final between Viborg HK and Oltchim Valcea in 2010.
In January 2014 Herning hosted the Men’s European Championship finals, the third EC in the city, with a packed Jyske Bank Boxen as venue.
Now its time to open the city to world, with the 2015 World Cup, in the Heart of Handball.
Once again Jyske Bank Boxen will be the stage where the world’s best players will fight for the trophy, while sold out crowds cheer them on.
In 2019 it will happen again, as Herning and Copenhagen have been selected as venues for the Men’s World Championship in 2019 which will be jointly hosted by Denmark and Germany.
