Serbia's national women’s team is in a rather special situation as the team is participating in its second finals of the Women’s World Championship without ever having qualified.
When Serbs participated for the first time in 2013 it was in their capacity as hosts and in the playoffs for this World Championship the team lost by aggregate 54-56 to Romania But subsequently the Serbs were being awarded one of two wild cards from the IHF.
In 2012 the Serbs despite home advantage lost a highly dramatic European Championship semi-final to their neighbors from Montenegro. But the year after the Serbs – still in front of their own audience - created an even bigger surprise in the knock-out stages of the World Championship as the team sent Norway out in the quarterfinals and then pulverized Poland in the semifinals. Brazil proved to be too strong in the championship final which the South Americans won by 22-20.
