The Netherlands has often made many great results in international competitions, but due to a limited number of top players which causes some instability they have never taken the final step to win medals.
The Dutch came close though at the World Championships in St. Petersburg 2005, when a very young Pearl van der Wissel led an inspired attacking play, while the defense was playing brilliantly. The result was that the Netherlands came in fifth ahead of traditionally strong nations such as Norway, France , Germany and South Korea.
The Dutch challenge with its lack of stability came true in the play off for this Wch, where they lost the return match after defeating the Czech Republic by ten goals at home. Prominent players on the Dutch team are world stars Nycke Groot and Lois Abbingh alongside super talents Estevana Polman and the clever defense strategist Kelly Dulfer .
