With Champions League winners ŽRK Budućnost Podgorica from the capital Podgorica as the powerhouse, Montenegro has in recent years established itself as a force in European women's handball. At national team level it somewhat surprisingly led to a silver medal at the Olympics in London in 2012 after Montenegrins along the way had defeated both France and Spain.
In the final, Norway were too strong, but four months later Montenegro had its revenge when the team after two extra times had a 34-31 victory over the Norwegians in the European Championship final in Belgrade.
Then as now the dominant players were Katarina Bulatovic, the great strategist Milena Knezevic (now married with new surname Raicevic) and the fast right winger Jovanka Radičević. Coach Dragan Adžić functions in a dual role, as he at club level has led ŽRK Budućnost Podgorica to two triumphs in the Champions League – the latest in 2015.
