Two of the biggest sensations in international women's handball in recent times have been when Kazakhstan both in 2002 and in 2010 succeeded in bringing home the Asian Championship. Both times defeating South Korea in the finals.
Both these championships took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan and both were in years without Olympic preparations meaning that the Koreans were not at full strength. But all in all very fine results from the team from Kazakhstan.
That Kazakhstan belongs in the top of the Asian women's handball was shown when the team in March went smoothly through the preliminary group at the Asian championships – among other results defeating the championship hosts Indonesia by impressive 68-5.
However in the end the Kazakhstan team managed only a 4th place at the finals, and had to qualify through the so-called Continental Challenge Trophy against opponents Congo, Mexico and Australia before the World Championship seat was secured. The predominant Kazakhstan profile is the top scorer at the Asian championships in 2015, Irina Alexandrova.
