That there is a difference between the best and second-best women’s team at the Pan American Championships is probably best expressed by the fact that Argentina in the bronze match in 2015 defeated Puerto Rico with impressive 33-16.
And this is not because Argentina is a major international handball power. Since Argentina’s first appearance at the World Championships in 1999 the country has only achieved final results in the lowest quarter of the tournament with two placements as number 19th (2009 and 2013) as the best.
Two of the current Argentine players are playing in the Brazilian league at club level, while the rest are scattered among 11 clubs in Argentina – a country with an area of more than one millon square miles. It provides some logistical challenge for coach Eduardo Peruchena, whose most eye-catching players are left wing Manuela Pizzo and left back Valeria Bianchi.
