For 15 years Angola and African women's handball was more or less two sides of rhe same coin. Led on by the physically strong and technically gifted Ilda Bengue Angola in 1989 won its first African Championship and the following 23 years they recaptured the title10 times out of 12 times possible.
Sisters Marcelina and Luisa Kiala took over from Bengue on international level and at club level no African clubs for more than 25 years have been able to challenge the two sides from Luanda - Primero de Agosto and Petro Atletico.
Although the Kiala sisters are not as dominant as they have been, the family is still strongly represented in the shape of half-sister Natalia Bernardo who alongside Isbel Guialo forms a deadly right side in attack.
Angola lost to Tunesia in a dramatic semi-final at the African Championships, but despite its continental status as number three they must still be regarded as a dominant African power.
