Art and handball meet at the World Championship
5th December is the first day of the 22nd IHF Women’s Handball World Championship and it is also the first day of a very special exhibition at the art museum in Herning, Heart.
“The Art of Handball” is the title and the exhibition shows a series of works by the artist Monty Knowles, who has bodypainted five Danish national team players for the Championship campaign.
The collaboration between the museum HEART and the “Heart of Handball" was natural.
"For us at HEART the World Championship is a unique opportunity to be part of an unorthodox cooperation and promote our museum to the 10,000's of fans who visit the city. The collaboration between the art and Danish Handball Association - and in such a big event like the World Championship in Herning - is something we gladly support. Therefore we immediately said yes when the opportunity presented itself," says Holger Reenberg, director at HEART.
Herning Municipality supports the cooperation, and Mayor Lars Krarup is looking forward to the upcoming World Championship.
"I am pleased that Herning's internationally renowned art museum can combine the art world with world-class handball. “We are always happy when Herning hosts major championships and the Women’s Handball World Championship is a really big event for the whole municipality. I personally look forward to many great experiences as a spectator at Denmark's matches at Jyske Bank Boxen," says Lars Krarup.
Profits go to charity
The exhibition will be available to everyone throughout the World Championship. At the same time, it is possible to make a bid for the works at an auction on www.Lauritz.com until December 18th. All profits from the sales go to two charity organizations, the Danish Julemærkefonden and The Bahamas Down Syndrome Association.
At the Danish Handball Association the president Per Bertelsen is thrilled about the exhibition:
"We are extremely excited that this exhibition has been developed in collaboration with HEART and Herning Municipality. The exhibition connects our core activities in the Championship campaign, the Heart of Handball slogan and our involvement in Julemærkefonden, and I am looking forward to putting handball in a new context," says Per Bertelsen.
If you are up for more art, you can see two current exhibitions with Danish world-names at HEART: "Danish - Design by Jens Quistgaard" and "Per Kirkeby - The real picture"
