Although China at the World Championships in 1990 achieved 8th place, their 11th place at the finals in Italy 2001 is still regarded as considerably better. First of all because 24 teams participated and secondly because China’s all time biggest profile, Zhai Chao, had her decisive break through.
Among others the Chinese then defeated Ukraine who the previous year had won silver at the the European Championship. Chao Zhai’s billiant performances helped her being voted best handballer in the world in 2002. Until then an unheard of title for a non-European player.
Chao Zhai signed up for Danish Randers HK and later she went on to become a double Champions League winner with Viborg HK and she still lives in Denmark.
